Free online
modeling agencies — which allow aspiring models to self-publish their headshots
and measurements on the internet without payment or any aesthetic criteria —
were a goldmine for the kind of subjects Marijke looks for. "The models
all have very individual goals for their self-presentation," she explains.
"The photos they post might vary from a sweet-looking girl with white
flowers in her hair to a naked man straddling a tree trunk. The contrast is
crazy." Browsing profiles, she began to ask herself, "Why does
someone sign up for this?" And so, for her recent series "WANTED
(L)," she contacted the models who intrigued her most, and arranged to
portray them herself. Her black-and-white portraits show the models in their
own homes and private spaces, but this time through Marijke's analytical lens.
"The pictures, for me, are more than flat images," she says.
"Because the models shared with me their deep, sometimes secret,
desires."
